Kore G.A.S.S. Pedals

Some riders have contacted Kore and mentioned that they are having difficulty with our G.A.S.S. pedals.  Most of these questions or comments lend us to believe that the G.A.S.S. pedals they have are models that were produced before mid 1997.  These pedals can be recognized by gasslogo.jpg (2431 bytes)the printed logo on the body and the smaller, round portion of the spindle where the pedal wrench fits.  The newer models have a raised double “K” logo on the body and a larger, square portion at the end of the spindle.

If you are having trouble with a newer style, please provide us with more details so that we can better assist you.  If you have an older set, please read on:

As with other pedal manufacturers, Kore has modified their pedals over time to reduce weight, lower costs and improve performance.  The three primary modifications include the following:

  • Larger wrench flats to easy installation and prevent damage to the axle when using a worn tool.
  • A portion of the body above the outer bearing was shaved down to ease disengagement from the pedal.
  • The plate was raised higher above the body to allow for compatibility with more shoes.

gassold.jpg (3210 bytes)If you have a pair of the older pedals and prefer they worked more like the newer models, there is a step we have found will help.  This involves modifying the body with a file.  Before proceeding, take a look at the shape of the older pedal body in the photo at left.

gassnew.jpg (3561 bytes)Now take a look at the newer pedal body.  Take note of the portion just above the outboard bearing.  Some material has been removed here as compared to our older model.  This is the modification we will now discuss.

Taking a look at your pedal you will notice that shape of the body above the inboard and outboard bearings is the same.   This is the area where G.A.S.S. is printed.   We are going to remove some of the material from above the outer bearing.  Starting at a point near the printed word KORE begin to remove material with your file or dremel in an upward slopping direction.  Only remove material up to the center of the G.A.S.S. logo.  Removing material beyond this point will weekend the body possibly causing it to fail.

The intention is to make a 2mm deep area which resembles a tipped over bowl or cup.  This scooped out area will create more room for your cleat to slide out of the plate and will force your cleat up away from the body when clipping out.  Thus, a pedal that works more like the newer models from Kore.
